-Lost Canyons was Found-

Yes, Lost Canyons was never really lost. We found it on our ride from Moorpark into North Simi Valley on this beautiful, but cold, winter's February ride. Even though only eight are in the group photo there were at least sixteen riders on this Saturday morning. Our destination was the Lost Canyons Golf Course for brunch. It was a beautiful morning to relax and socialize on the eating terrace before heading back into Moorpark on this 31 mile bike route. -A Ride Down the Coast-

Anytime we bike down the Pacific Coast we are always grateful for living in Southern California and especially Ventura County. The group had a beautiful ride from Camarillo's Mission Oaks Community Park past Cal State Channel Islands to Pacific Coast Highway. No whales or dolphins were spotted, but we did have a wonderful break at our destination at Neptune's Net. We had at least 16 riders join us today on this very flat 41 mile ride. -Chinatown Firecracker 30 Miler-

Charity bike rides are great. Especially when they don't cost very much, have a t-shirt included, have lunch provided, have a fun but challenging route that is manned with volunteers at all of the important road intersections. So it was with the Chinatown Firecracker 30 Mile bike ride. Over 800 bikers participated this year as well as five Moorpark Riders. The generally feeling was that this ride is well worth your time, if you do not expect to bike fast. Due to some of the tough hills in Elysian Park, Griffith Park, great photo opportunities and many beginner bikers it was difficult to get a consistently fast pace. But, what the heck, it was fun biking by Dodger Stadium, Disney Studios, ABC Studios, Tuloca Lake, University City, Los Angeles River and Chinatown. -North Ranch Windy Ride-

Well, even though it is not raining the weather became a little windy on this "North Ranch Loop" on Saturday from Moorpark. However, the winds did not detour our mighty group of 12 riders that completed the 31 miler into Thousand Oaks, Westlake, Oak Park before stopping at the Coffee Bean for a refuel in Sunset Hills. Wind or not, it is always great to ride your bike in the eastern part of Ventura County. Come join us for a ride soon, and remember to bring a friend. A mighty group of eight riders ventured between the rainy days to bike on the "Somis Groves 32 Miler" from the new ride start at Camarillo's Mission Oaks Community Park on Sunday, January 22nd. It was cold and overcast at the beginning of the ride but as we headed towards Moorpark it started to break open. A refueling break was had at the beautiful Moorpark Country Club before heading through Moorpark on our fun route downhill into Camarillo. -Firecracker/Chinatown Bike Event-

Participating in a biking charity event is always fun. You get to ride in different surroundings and with people doing what you like to do, bike! This coming February 11th is the 34th Annual Firecracker 20 or 30 Mile Bike Ride beginning in Chinatown at 9am. The route head out of Chinatown into Elysian Park, Griffith Park, Forestlawn and along the Los Angeles River Bike Path. Registration has begun, but the discount price of $33 ends on January 15th. Price includes the ride, rest stops, a t-shirt and post ride lunch. This is the best price for a charity ride EVER. So, come join the fun on that Saturday in downtown Los Angeles. -Changes You Should Know About-

A few changes are heading our way. First of all, the scheduled ride on December 25th has been CANCELLED. But, in its place an additional ride on January 1st has been ADDED. The "Santa Susana Adventure" 39 miler is set at 8:30am from Moorpark's Tierra Rejada Park into the far east end of Simi Valley with brunch at the Old Susana Cafe on Kuehner. And the new "2012 Ride Schedule" is now posted on this webpage, so make your changes on your calendar. Looking forward on having a great 2012 worth of fun biking in the Eastern Ventura County.

Well, here it is in the middle of December. No snow, no rain, no cold temps. Only 72 degrees in crystal clear skis. It is tough life living in Southern California. That being said, 10 of the Moorpark Riders Group biked on our monthly ride into Thousand Oaks' Sunset Hills area to stop at our favorite Coffee Bean for a break. As we were ready to leave, Tom took this photo of the sign of "No Bicycles." Such rebels we all were today, violating the "sign law." Just like being in high school. The drinks and socializing were fantastic and so was the beautiful 23 mile ride. Come join us for a ride and remember to bring a friend.

Boy the year has gone fast. We are already approaching 2012! Some new additional information concerning the 2012 Ride Schedule. We have added a New Year's Day ride that leaves from Moorpark and heads toward East Simi Valley and the historic Santa Susana area. We plan to refuel at the Old Susana Cafe. You can see the route by clicking on "Old Santa Susana Adventure Map." Also, the rides from 2012 have been changed slightly. The rides have been rotated and with a few changes of the "Somis Citrus Groves Ride" moving from Moorpark to start in Camarillo on the 4th Sunday of the month. So the weatherman was finally correct on his prediction of Santa Ana Winds on Saturday morning. What he did not say was how much they were going to blow. 8 riders ventured on our favorite "Lost Canyons Loop" only to experience a headwind for 15 miles. And boy was it tough. We were so tired, eating inside the golf course cafe was a true relief. After refueling our system we headed back into the elements only to experience the BEST tailwind in the history of mankind. All the way from the golf course and back into the ride start parking lot we almost did not even have to pedal. Well kinda. Anyways, were all survived the "wind adventure" on our ride this Saturday morning. Not it is time for a lunch, a nap and college football!

-Biker Friendly Cities-

It is great to see cities show physical support for cyclists. Whether it be road signs for new bike trails, like the one in Portage, Michigan. Or the addition of a bike rack in Pacific City, Oregon. Anything the cities can do is always appreciated by the cycling community. Lets hope that the cities in Ventura County upgrade roads with new asphalt and biker safety bike lanes.

Holidays are so much fun to ride a bike. Especially in the fall and winter months in Southern California. A small but mighty group headed on the short but fun ride on the "Wood Ranch Loop". The weather was fantastic as can be seen by the short sleeves and no arm warmers on the riders here at the end of November. Only bright sunny skies greeted the 12 members as we headed off in chilly weather for the 34 mile "Somis Citrus Groves Loop." What a wonderfully beautifully fall day we had as we trekked from Moorpark into Camarillo, Somis and Moorpark again for brunch at the Moorpark Country Club. Soooooo much fun. In January 2012 we plan to modify the group Ride Schedule. The rides will be moved to different weeks of the month. As well as one of the rides will be dropped and a new one will be added to the schedule. The reason for the changes is simple. After more than a year of the same schedule it is time for something different. Hopefully all of you will enjoy the biking in Eastern Ventura County all the more due to the modified schedule. -Detour on the Ojai Valley Trail-

If you ever have the desire to bike on the Ventura River/Ojai Valley Bike Trail then you have picked a good one. The trail leaves Ventura and heads into Ojai on an old railroad route for about 18 miles one way. HOWEVER, a small section of this beautiful trail is now off limits due to construction. The section is an old concrete "bridge" that is being torn down and replaced with a beautiful "real" bridge. So detours to Santa Ana Road from Foster Park will you head into Ojai at least until April when the bridge is suppose to be completed. Much thanks to the Ventura County Board of Supervisors and the Channel Islands Bike Club for their foresight and money to get a much needed safety project completed!

It is amazing that 14 riders showed up for the Lost Canyons 30 Mile Loop this morning. Why? Because it was 41 degrees in Moorpark! However, those that did show up were treated to a wonderfully beautiful fall/winter ride into North Simi Valley. The skies were clear and the sun warm to help us as we headed into brunch at the golf course. The views were great and so were the meals. Fun was had by all on this monthly ride. Today was a fun ride from Moorpark down into Camarillo before heading up the citrus and avocado hills of Somis and Moorpark. Brunch was had at the beautiful Moorpark Country Club. Holidays are great. Especially when you ride a bike. And more so when you ride with friends in wonderful weather. So it was on our Labor Day ride from Moorpark into Thousand Oaks for the "Cal Lutheran Ramble." ride of 32 miles. A mighty group of 11 met at Tierra Rejada park in cool weather with tropical sky's. It never did rain, but it was a fantastic day to bike. Joni won the prize today for having two flats AT ONE TIME! Kate also won the prize for having the best "bike invention." Her bike storage basket was a hit with the members. Kate should go into business and get rich off a fun biking idea. Remember Kate, we all get a percent of your riches. 11 Moorpark Riders headed east towards North Simi Valley for the "Lost Canyons Loop" of 30 miles. What another beautiful day we had on the way to the Lost Canyons Golf Course for brunch from Moorpark. We began in fog but finished in sun with a beach breeze to cool us off. The ladies at the golf course again set us up with adjoining tables with umbrellas and lots of ice water. It was fun to talk and relax in this beautiful setting. What do you say when 14 Moorpark Bike Riders head up into the hills on one of the hottest days of the year? CONGRATULATIONS! Yes, we all handled the heat and difficult route of the "Conejo Valley Adventure" of 37 miles from Camarillo into Moorpark, Thousand Oaks, Newbury Park before heading back down into Camarillo. Thank goodness for the rest stop break at the beautiful Los Robles Golf Course. We ventured into the air conditioned dining room to stuff down egg sandwiches, oatmeal and lots of Gatorade and cold ice teas! We were so lucky on this ride in that as we headed westward the beach breeze took effect. But, we really enjoyed the cool breeze and downhill on the Potrero Grade as we "took the lane" all the way down to Cal State University Channel Islands. For everyone that participated in this ride you are so fit to have handled the heat and hills on this wonderful route. Great job! Well, baseball can have their days, but so can bikers. Yes, as with our typical Southern Cal summer, it starts to heat up in the month of September and first half of October. Soooooo, prepare for those "dog days of summer" blues by heading out on your bike with water, food, sunscreen and your cell phone with you. Stop often, drink lots and by all means take it easy and enjoy the ride. Head out with a friend just in case you are in need of help. While other Moorpark Bike Riders "slaved" at serving food, cutting food, rolling food, eating food at the rest stop at Stowe Park in Goleta, a few Moorpark Bike Riders were lucky to actually partake in the Cool Breeze Century Charity Ride from Ventura on August 20th. Tom and Melissa were two very lucky cyclists that got to enjoy the perfect day with overcast skies to keep down the August heat in temps of 70 degrees. There were 1700 cyclists for the day and probably 1000 did the 100 Mile Ride. If you have never experienced a weekend charity ride, do so. They are so much fun. Yes, it is the middle of August. Yes, it was overcast and foggy the ENTIRE ride. Yes, no one cared because we just enjoyed heading to the Pacific Coast with a group of 12 riders and enjoyed the wonderful morning of biking. Our mighty group grew as we headed from Camarillo's Mission Oaks Community Park for our monthly "Neptunes Net Away Ride." We had a wonderful time in 65 degree weather with great friends. Yes, August means that the Moorpark Bike Rides group is celebrating it's first birthday. Wow, the year went fast. We have experienced changes from a few rides a month to a full Saturday ride schedule with an two additional Sunday rides from Camarillo. As of this month we have had over 84 bike riders join us on the bike routes in the eastern part of Ventura County. Don't bring any presents, just yourself to our next bike ride at 8:30am. Weekend charity rides are always fun because you are biking with people that like to bike like you. But also you get to experience a new region to bike that is fun and different. Mike and Nancy headed to Big Bear to bike in this new ride beginning from Big Bear Village. A choice of 75, 50 or 25 milers were offered. They chose the shorter route because of the altitude and hills at the end of the ride. The weather was fantastic. 75 degrees with clear skies and a slight cooling breeze throughout the ride. -North Ranch Loop Ride-

It is really too bad that there are usually only four Saturdays in a month. Because when the fifth Saturday occurs it is time for our "North Ranch Loop Ride." This route is one of the prettiest rides on our schedule. We ventured on mostly bike lanes from Moorpark, into Thousand Oaks, North Ranch, Oak Park and Westlake Village before refueling at our favorite Starbucks in Sunset Hills. Our group of seven riders had a wonderful but challenging ride up and down on this route. Keep your eyes open for the next fifth Saturday of the month and join us for some biking fun!

-Conejo Valley Adventure Ride-

From our convienent new ride location at Mission Oaks Community Park in Camarillo we began our travels on the 37 mile ride of the "Conejo Valley Adventure." We were lucky to have fog up Santa Rosa Road. But, the skies broke free of the fog to release a beautiful spring-like morning into Moorpark and Thousand Oaks. After wandering through many beautiful streets in Thousand Oaks we stopped at the Los Robles Golf Course for a refueling break. Great to spend time with our fellow riders in a relaxed and beautiful location. Then onto the famous "Potrero Grade" and down into Cal State University Channel Islands." From their we split in two groups. The CIBC Far & Fast riders headed back to Saticoy while the Moorpark Riders finished back in Camarillo. Total riders we 13 in number for this nice ride. Well, with our group birthday coming up in August, we were approaching 70 riders that have joined us on our eastern Ventura County rides. Today newcomers Leslie, JoAnn, Michelle and Tony showed up at Tierra Rejada Park ready to venture on the Wood Ranch Loop of 20 miles on this beautiful springlike summer's morning. The clouds cleared out for a beautiful day with cool ocean breezes after taking our usual break at Starbucks. Come join the fun on this relaxed and social rides into a beautiful part of the county.

-A Morning Discovery Ride-

Have you ever just wanted to toddle on your bike with no real route or speed in mind? Well, Mike did this past week into Thousand Oaks from Moorpark. On his venture he "discovered" two new biking routes. First, along Erbes Road when it flattens out, Mike took a LEFT hand turn on La Granada Drive. After a short climb and seeing signs stating "No Outlet" he found a gate opened with a hiking trail next to it. Well, off he went DOWN the utility road until it turned into Conejo School Road and hooked up with Hillcrest Road. A major find when riding southwards. The next find was off Hodencamp and Page Lane heading to Conejo Creek Park, site of the Conejo Valley Days and tons of youth soccer games. A new bike path has been installed along the outside of the park to Janss Road. Such a beautiful bike path along the green park. All fun stuff on a relaxing day when he could view the sights and smell the roses. Get out and ride soon, it is so much fun, anytime!

-Windmill Charity Ride-

What a fun time our 11 riders had at this year's "Windmill Rides" in Santa Maria. Most of us settled into the Radisson Hotel just 1.5 miles from the ride start. After biking to the park and checking-in we headed out on our various rides. Most chose to bike the 52 miler from Santa Maria up Highway 1 into Los Alamos. Then we headed up Aliso Canyon and DOWN Foxen Canyon Roads to the second rest stop in the rural town of Sisquoc. From there it was UP again over the oil fields before heading down Clark Avenue to the finish at Pioneer Park. There we had the best Santa Maria Tri-Tip BBQ lunch with all of our biking friends. The weather was fantastic for biking. Overcast, 65 degrees with clearing the last third of the ride. After a few hours of needed rest we walked to the post-ride dinner location at Pepper Garcia's Mexican Restaurant at the Santa Maria Airport. So much fun to be with friends during the ride, in the hotel and at dinner time. Participate in a "charity ride" soon, they are so much fun. Well our MPBC Sunday ride left from our new and wonderful ride location at the Mission Oaks Community Park in Camarillo. Lots of parking and even restrooms that are open near the tennis courts. Our ride today ventured down the Pacific Coastline on this "Neptune's Net Out & Back" 40 mile flat ride. Today, 11 riders were lucky to begin in overcast and windless skies. The pace was good with no headwinds today. The clouds cleared on our way back to Camarillo. We had a wonderful morning of biking with great friends. See you on a ride soon! Oh, and bring a friend.

-Another Double Ride Weekend-

Another double ride weekend coming! Time to enjoy the road again, twice. This coming weekend of July 9 & 10 we have two rides. Saturday's ride is our short "Sunset Hills Out & Back Ride" of 23 miles into Thousand Oaks. Come join us as we refuel at Starbucks in the Sunset Hills area of the Conejo Valley. Saturday's ride departs from Moorpark's Tierra Rejada Park at 8:30am. As for Sunday, we start from Camarillo's Mission Oaks Community Park at 8:30am for the "Neptunes Net Out & Back Ride" to head down to the coastline to have a refueling break at Neptune's Net in Malibu. This ride is as flat as a pancake for 40 miles. We plan to finish at Starbucks at the end of the ride in Camarillo. So, come join the fun this coming weekend for two great rides.

-Double Ride Holiday Weekend-

Hurray! Two rides this weekend because of the national holiday. Yes, on our normal Saturday we are having our favorite "Lost Canyon Loop" of 30 miles into North Simi Valley. Our destination is the Lost Canyon Golf Course to have a refueling break at their cafe overlooking the golf course on their dining terrace. This is a surprisingly beautiful urban route among the rolling hills of Simi Valley and Moorpark. An added addition this weekend is the "Pick & Choose Ride" on Monday, July 4th. This is a ride where the group decides which route to take. It should be fun. Both rides depart at 8:30am from Moorpark's Tierra Rejada Park west parking lot. Two Moorpark Bike Riders traveled northwards to enjoy the weekend in Cambria while participating in the annual Country Coast Classic. This is a wonderful charity ride that heads up Highway 1 to the turn around at famous Ragged Point. Along the way they had wonderful views of the California Coastline, elephant seals, Piedra Blanca Lighthouse, Hearst Castle and Ragged Point. This ride has a 100, 45, and 25 mile rides. We do the 45 do to avoid the strong headwinds that the 100 milers have in the afternoon. At the finish in Shamel Park in Cambria, the lunch we chose was grilled salmon. It is the best salmon we have ever eaten! They are famous for the salmon, because no other ride offers that on their finishing lunches. If you have never biked in a charity ride, do so soon. Wow, a new thing to do on our bike rides. Go "country clubing." During our recent Saturday ride on the "Somis Citrus Groves Loop" into the orchards of Camarillo, Somis and Moorpark we arrived near the end of the route at the Moorpark Country Club. Here we were able to sit and refuel on some fantastic bagel egg sandwiches while enjoying the view of the golf course. This was our first time stopping at the Moorpark Country Club off Grimes Canyon Road. It turned out to be a great place for us in the future. Also, we will be venturing to three golf course "refueling stops" at Lost Canyons (Simi Valley), Moorpark Country Club (Moorpark) and Los Robles (Thousand Oaks). Coming Saturday, June 18th is an old ride but with a new look. Our old "Somis Nut House Ride" is now the "Somis Citrus Groves Ride." Why? Because we wanted to try having brunch at the Moorpark Country Club overlooking the golf course on their dining terrace. To do so we needed to reverse the old route. The mileage is still the same, but we do not have to finish up the long grind on Santa Rosa Road. The country club is expecting us, so bring some cash to settle the bill while enjoying the ride and views of the Moorpark hills. Here is the route link of the "Somis Citrus Groves Ride." Well, it seems no matter what we do there is usually a conflict at our Away Ride location at Freedom Park in Camarillo. The park is so popular, a good thing, that there are numerous activities such as: triathlons, running races, soccer games, airshows, Greek festivals and the like. Many times it is very difficult to find a place to park when any of these activities are happening. So, out of pure frustration our down the coast ride will depart from "Mission Oaks Community Park" off Santa Rosa Road on Oak Creek and Mission Oaks by the tennis courts. This also is the starting location of our new Away Ride of the "Conejo Valley Adventure" that occurs the 4th Sunday of the Monday. Therefore, the change will be made to begin the new "Neptune's Net Out & Back" ride of 40 miles from Mission Oaks Community Park which is close to places to eat. Camarillo and Moorpark riders should like the change because it is closer to home. The new route slip is now posted as: Neptunes Net Out & Back.

Two group members, Mike and Nancy, were off having a short two week vacation in Northern California. During their stay they we lucky to bike on three great biking trails. First the Monterey Coastal Bike Trail from Castroville down the coast into Cannery Row in Monterey. The second was the fantastic American River Bike Trail from Sacramento to Folsom. And finally the Coyote Bike Trail from Morgan Hill into San Jose. Each trail had its own character while offering wonderfully paved and signed bike roads. If you are ever in the Monterey, San Jose or Sacramento areas make sure you bring your bike and try out this great biking routes. The 8th and final stage of the 2011 edition of the Tour of California entered the region of Ventura County into Piru, Fillmore and our hometown of Moorpark before finishing in downtown Thousand Oaks. A very overcast day was good for the cyclists but not for the photographers. We set up on the hillside along Tierra Rejada Road, only a block from our house. Other club members headed over to the Balcom Canyon Hill or the Norwegian Grade. Watching the Tour of California is always fun! I thought this sign was such a laugh in downtown Philadelphia's Rittenhouse Square Park. Philadelphia people mostly walk or ride their bike around town to work, play, eat, chores etc. Lots of bikes. And they are not afraid to be aggressive and "take the lane." But, they do need to have a better understanding of the park signs. Go figure.

Here is comes. It being the 2011 Tour of California bike race. It all began on Sunday, May 15 and ends in Thousand Oaks on Sunday, May 22nd. On the final stage the route starts in Santa Clarita into Fillmore and up famous Balcom Canyon Road onto our own "Somis Citrus Groves Ride" route. The ride will head off the famous climb and up "Horse Hill" to Grimes Canyon Road where it will turn onto Los Angeles Avenue and Tierra Rejada Road. It goes right next to our standard ride start location at Tierra Rejada Park. How fun is this? See the "Log Timing Sheet" to predict what time they will pass through the City of Moorpark (probably 1:30pm). The Sprint Section is along Tierra Rejada Road between Mountain Meadow and Walnut Creek! Wow, this coming weekend (May 14 & 15) we have TWO rides scheduled. The first one being our standard Saturday ride leaving at 8:30am from the Tierra Rejada Park west parking lot to journey on the "Sunset Hills Out & Back" of 23 miles into Thousand Oaks. This is a short but fun scenic rolling hills route. On Sunday is our monthly Away Ride from Freedom Park at the Camarillo Airport. The "Malibu Out & Back" heads to the Pacific Ocean and down the coastline for a fantastic ride. You can turn around anywhere on the ride to adjust your mileage. The route is 47 miles to Trancas Beach, but can be shortened to 32 mile at Neptunes Net or 22 miles at Pt. Mugu State Park. We will meet for brunch at the Waypoint Cafe on the airport landing strip. So come join the fun for each paced and social rides on two great routes.

FINALLY! The worst biking road in the County of Ventura is being repaired and newly paved as you read this blurb. Yes, the road is one of our favorite routes, "Somis Citrus Groves", and the road biked during past Tour of California Races is going to be as smooth as silk. The Public Works just starting paving on Wed., April 27th. So, work should be completed in a least a week, if not sooner. Paving starts at Stockton and Broadway and ends at Stockton and Waters. What do you think of when seeing golf courses? Playing golf right? WRONG! The actual answer is eating morning breakfast on their terraces overlooking the beautiful views. We are lucky to have gotten approval from three local eastern county golf courses to eat at their cafes during our monthly bike rides. The golf courses of Lost Canyons in Simi Valley, Los Robles in Thousand Oaks and Moorpark Country Club in Moorpark have allowed us to stop and refuel during our rides as we pass by on our planned routes. What fun this is! We have had enthusiastic turnouts for the "Lost Canyon Loop" while having a breakfast break with a stunning view of the Lost Canyons Golf Course. The REVISED ride schedule beginning JUNE 1ST is being modified to have some additional rides as well as updated routes with our new refueling stops. It is amazing. Amazing how the interest of biking in the Eastern Ventura County has grown since we began in August, 2010 over 7 months ago. Our rides started with only 2-4 riders per week to an average of about 8-15 per week with over 54 participants. This is really a very good turn out for such a small area. Obviously, there must be a demand to participate in bike rides that are slower and more social in nature with more regrouping stops. Rain was predicted on this Saturday's charity ride of the Tour de Sewer in Bell Gardens. However, we were very lucky to have just overcast skies with cool temps, no rain. Four Moorpark riders (Gayle, Dave, Nancy, Mike & BillC) ventured up the Rio Hondo and San Gabriel Rivers for the 28 mile basically flat route. Yes, the ride did have on long hill, but the downhill side was quite nice. This ride offered a lot for the money. You get the ride, rest stop goodies, lunch and a t-shirt for only $48. We really enjoyed the ride due to the fact that most of the route was off city streets along the river levees having no stop lights. This weekend is a real winner. There are 2 rides planned. On Saturday 3/19 is our "Somis Nut House" ride of 33 miles into the citrus groves of Moorpark & Somis. Two breaks are planned for this ride. The first one at Kim's Donuts in Camarillo & and second after the ride at Java Kai across the street from the ride start in Moorpark. On Sunday 3/20 is the monthly away ride from Freedom Park at the Camarillo Airport leaving at 8:30am for the "Malibu Out & Back" ride of between 20-47 miles. Mileages vary according to where you decide to turn around. An after ride brunch will happen at the Waypoint Cafe also at the ride start of Camarillo Airport overlooking the landing airplanes. A great two days of California bike riding. Be prepared, sprinkles and rain is forecast for this weekend.

Well, ridership numbers are increasing week by week. On our Lost Canyon Loop on 3/5 we had a total of 15 riders and today 3/12 on the Sunset Hills North Ride we had 14 riders. A pretty good turnout for this small part of Eastern Ventura County. Since our birthday in August of 2010 we have had a total of 44 different riders partake in our fun and relaxed rides. Well, March came rolling in like a mouse rather than a lion today on a ride from Zuma Beach to Pt. Mugu Rock and back for a ride of 31 miles. Mike and Nancy enjoyed the best weather on their bike ride. It was sunny, clear, little wind and around 70 degrees along the Pacific Coastline. Moorpark Bike Rides magic just keeps on happening. 15 riders, our largest turnout yet, arrived for our springlike route into Simi Valley's Lost Canyons area. We were greeted to 70 degree weather and just a slight cooling breeze. What a great time we had into the countryside of the Lost Canyons Golf Course. The restaurant was all ready for us when we arrived. Cloth table cover with cloth napkins and water glasses ready for the taking. The riders enjoyed the food, drinks, views and especially the social togetherness of our club riders. The photos above only illustrate part of the fun we had this beautiful morning. Always trying to improve on our cool local bike rides, we are thinking of adding a coffee stop at the END of the ride in Moorpark. We have a wonderful coffee place directly across the street from our ride start known as Java Kai Coffee. Thoughts are to have a once a month visit on the third Saturday of the month. It is always fun to get together for more talk about our biking adventures. What better way than over a cup of coffee or even a smoothie. If you are really hunger there is a Subway right next door. Yes, it was very cold. 40 degrees! Yes, it was very beautiful. Yes, we had a great time on this Federal Holiday. Our "Pick & Choose Ride" headed towards Simi Valley's Wood Ranch for hot chocolate and hot coffee at our standard stop at Starbucks. Six of the Moorpark Bike Club members enjoyed the company of other riders, the clear crisp air and especially the views of the snow covered local mountains from Olsen Road and Read Road Bike Connector. Wow, what a great weekend there is in store for riders of the Moorpark Bike Rides. First of all our regularly scheduled ride on Saturday at 8:30am for the "Somis Nut House Ride". On Monday is the Federal President's Holiday so we have a "Pick & Choose Ride" set for 8:30am from Tierra Rejada Park. What a beautiful day it was at the Tour de Palm Springs charity ride on February 12th. So much fun riding in the desert climate of 72 degrees with snow still on the far mountains. Six MPBC members particiapted in this great biking activity: Tom biked the 102 miler; Dave and Mike biked in the 56 miler; Nancy and Gayle did the 25 miler; while Denise rode the 10 miler. All celebrated together at the after ride dinner at the Blue Coyote Mexican Grill in beautiful downtown Palm Springs. At some point you should participate in a biking charity event. In their attempts to make biking more safe and fun the Public Works Dept. is having a general input meeting to discuss the widening and installing of bike lanes for Lynn Road from Hillcrest to Avenida de los Arboles. The meeting is this coming Tuesday at 6pm in the Emmanuel Presbyterian Church off Lynn Road in Thousand Oaks. Come join the meeting to view your concerns, especially if you are a bike commuter. Even though the Ojai Valley Bike Trail is obviously not in Eastern Ventura County, we feel it appropriate to mention this wonderful news item. The basic plans for the needed bridge over the San Antonio Creek on the Ojai Valley Bike Trail has been set to be finished by March of 2012. The Ojai trail is so beautiful and well traveled. However, the old crossing of the creek has been very hazardous after heavy rains. Thank you Ventura County Board of Supervisors for this vision for a safer biking community. The photo above was taken from the clubhouse patio at Lost Canyons Golf Course. Our ride to Lost Canyons Golf Course began very chilly at about 45 degrees. But, it eventually warmed up to 60 degrees and sunny. What a great day to ride into Simi Valley from Moorpark. We had 12 riders this morning on the way to brunch at the golf course. This is the first time we had stopped there, but the wait was worth it. The waitress was so kind and helpful. We did surprise them with our group of 12 however. This coming Saturday (2/5) is a surprisingly beautiful urban ride into North Simi Valley with our "Lost Canyon Loop Ride" of 31 miles. We head east from Moorpark into the Tierra Rejada Valley towards the Wood Ranch area while turning northward into the Big Sky area bordered by Lost Canyons Golf Course. At the golf course there is a resturant that serves breakfast burritos, bagels, juice etc. We may check it out for our refueling stop. After our efforts uphill it is time to bike down on the Sinaloa River Bike Trail back to Moorpark. Then back home for a needed shower. See you and your friends on Saturday for a great ride. Start off the new year with a weekend charity ride. It is always fun to have a goal of a longer ride than one takes during their training rides. Also, the charity events are tax deductable while getting either a t-shirt or lunch or both. The next upcoming charity ride is on Febuary 12th for the Tour de Palm Springs. PS is a fun place to visit, eat, shop, hike AND bike. TdPS has lots of rides to choose from with a century, half century, twenty five miler and less. The weather is usually fantastic because the ride is in our east desert. Let members know of your intentions of biking in this large event (7,000 bikers!). Joining of two county bike clubs. In efforts to increase the partcipation in road biking the Channel Islands Bike Club (Ventura) and our Moorpark Bike Club (Moorpark) are trying something different. New CIBC President, Leslie Ogden, is going to incorporate our Moorpark Bike Club rides into the CIBC Ride Schedule. The goal is to increase the number of riders in experiencing East Ventura County bike riding as well as the rides in the west county. Well, so much for good planning. Due to the recent rains, there has been three landslides on PCH/Highway 1 along the ocean to Malibu. We had a scheduled "Away Ride" to Malibu from Camarillo for this coming weekend (Sunday,January 16th), but due to the hazardous condition of the road for biking, our route has changed. HOWEVER, you will totally enjoy this ride because it circles the three lakes along Highway 101. This route contains some of the Cruisen the Conejo Ride around lakes of Malibu, Westlake and Sherwood for 35 miles. Bring your camera, it is suppose to be a beautiful day. We have a planned reststop/refueling at Stoneground Bakery in Agoura. So, see you this coming Sunday at 8:30am in the Thousand Oaks Transportation Center off Highway 101 at the Rancho Road exit, 1/2 mile south of the freeway. Our regular Saturday ride is with the "Somis Nut House Ride", while a new addition of an Away Ride on Sunday with the "Three Lakes Adventure" and finally a Major Holiday Ride on Monday (Martin Luther King Day) with the "Pick and Choose Ride." All begin at 8:30am. So take advantage of this rare opportunity to have three clubs rides in one weekend. A tough decision here. Do we bike to North Thousand Oaks in the Sunset Hills Oakbrook Shopping Center to have coffee at Starbucks or Coffee Bean? Starbucks tends to be too crowded to seat our large group outside. But the coffee is great. Then we can be at the Coffee Bean with room to roam outside but with not the appeal. It is an on going problem. NOT, biking is always fun whether we have coffee or not. See you this coming Saturday at 8:30am for the Sunset Hills North Ride from Moorpark and see the view of the snow covered mountains in the distance. Update: it was 43 degees and very cold, but the stop at Starbucks saved the day with hot chocolate and coffee!

No, there weren't 11 Pipers Piping on the ride this morning. But, what a coincidence to have 11 club riders on the first day of 2011! Yes, eleven riders headed towards Simi Valley's "Lost Canyon Ride" on this very cold (45 degrees) New Year's Day. Everyone enjoyed the fun and scenic route into Big Sky country of North Simi Valley. Today was even better with the traffic being very light to nonexistent. What a great way to bring in the new year. We all have New Year's resolutions, right? A few of them on the list is probably losing weight, becoming more fit and biking more often, right? Well, here is your chance to check off all three at one time. This coming Saturday just happens to be New Years Day. We have packed in all those calories from eating the great goodies during the Winter Holidays. So, lets bike all those unwanted calories off with the club ride into Lost Canyons of Simi Valley. This is a wonderful ride into the hills next to the Big Sky area in North Simi Valley. Come join the fun this coming Saturday at 8:30am starting at Tierra Rejada Park in Moorpark. In our efforts to make the riding more enjoyable and safe we have updated our "route slips." Each Saturday club ride has a route slip that can be printed for the rider's use. As of late December, each route slip has been updated and now includes a small directional map to aid the rider in their quest for a fun ride. Obviously, we can not make the maps too big, but they should help in giving the club rider a general idea of the route for that particular weekend. Go to the "Saturday Bike Rides" listing on the right hand side of this webpage and click on any ride you choose to participate in for that weekend. Then you can print the PDF file and bring it along on the ride. Enjoy!

What a great time we all had biking, talking and have a snack at our turn around point at the Oakbrook Center for coffee. This is the most riders EVER to bike on one of our planned Saturday rides. Our of our club riders, Joni Jordan, was involved in a bike accident this Saturday, December 4th. As of the evening hours we have no further information about her condition. We understand she was admitted to Community Memorial Hospital in Ventura, but word is that she will be released Saturday night. Our understanding is that Joni is home and doing well. Our thoughts are with Joni!

-New Away Ride Addition-

Just to see how the idea flys, the Moorpark Bike Club is adding a "Away Ride" every 3rd Sunday of the month starting in January 2011. Most bikers like to venture to different places for a bit of variety. So, in our efforts to expand the interest in the bike club we have added a ride that will begin at Freedom Park at the Camarillo Airport for a ride down the coast into Malibu. The ride will begin at 8:30am like the other club rides and will end with a "refueling meal" at the Waypoint Cafe overlooking the Camarillo Airport. The full ride is about 47 miles, but you can turn around anywhere to shorten the distance of your route. So, come join us in 2011 for one of the best bike rides in California, "Malibu Out & Back" overlooking the Pacific Ocean!

Yes, it is time change to warmer biking clothes. No more biking in just short sleeve jerseys. The decision on what to wear during the winter months is always a difficult one, especially in Southern California where the temps changes so much. Try this guideline the next time you bike. Obviously everyone is different, but it is a starting point on what to wear:

70 degrees: short sleeve jersey, short pants and short socks.
60 degrees: add a short sleeve windbreaker, long socks.
50 degrees: add arm warmers, long sleeve windbreaker.
40 degrees: add leg warmers, under shirt, wool socks, long fingered gloves.
30 degrees: add lined windbreaker, toe warmers, ear muffs.
20 degrees: stay at home and have some hot chocolate!

-Moorpark Paving Improvement Projects-

If you haven't noticed, Tierra Rejada Road from Highway 23 east towards the Simi Valley city limits AND Walnut Canyon/Broadway Roads have been paved completely! It is great for cyclists in the eastern part of Ventura County because these are some of the main access roads. The newly asphalted lanes make biking even better for this part of the county. As of Thursday, November 18th paving is continuing and lines still need to be painted. But, bikers are still allowed on the road. Even Moorpark Road (Norwegian Grade) is to be finished the week of Thanksgiving. Simple things like this make bikers very happy!

The "best" ride is always around the corner. Well, club members Nancy and Mike biked in another great route. During their "La Bamba Tour Camping Trip" they did a little road biking. One of the rides was in Nevada in the very scenic Red Rock Canyon Park in North West Las Vegas. This is one of the premier bike rides in all of the west coast. Because of the great scenery, big bike lanes, one way traffic and super clean smog less air. If you are ever in Las Vegas plan to get out of the casinos and go biking in the Red Rock area of the state. This would be worth your efforts, trust us. Did you ever have the perfect bike ride? Well, club members Nancy and Mike had such an experience recently. On our travels to Arizona we stopped in the Palm Springs area and ventured on our bikes from our Thousand Trails Campground in Palm Desert to the neighboring, and bike friendly, City of LaQuinta. We had no wind, clear sky's, 72 degree weather and beautiful urban scenery. Such a fun time. The ride like this makes us glad we are healthy and able to ride 30 miles and smile afterwards. Go for a ride soon and enjoy your experience like we did.

While on a weekend vacation to San Diego we passed through the City of Long Beach to the Belmont Shore area. This is a very popular shopping and eating region of Long Beach near Cal State University Long Beach. While hunting for some college souvenirs we discovered the green colored bike lane. This is a great idea to provide safety for the local bikers of Long Beach. We noticed many cyclists using the "green path of safety" during our visit. We wish other cities would provide such an interest in the safety of road cyclists whether it be commuters or recreationalists. Click on "Long Beach Bike Safety" to view their fun biking link.

Every bike club needs a logo. A logo that will signify to other cyclists that this is our bike club. To determine what is a good logo is difficult. There are so many factors to consider. Boy, were the riders of the Moorpark Bike Club lucky that the Santa Ana winds did not start until in the very late stages of our ride to "Sunset Hills North" to 1000 Oaks this morning. Our ride totaled 25 miles with members (L-R) Dave, Gayle, Ernesto, Tom, Jim and Mike (taking photo) ventured on a totally beautiful bike ride from Moorpark into Simi Valley onto Thousand Oaks before heading down the newly paved Read Road Bike Path Connector. It just so happens that Starbucks is our turn around point for this Saturday's route to "Sunset Hills North" from Moorpark's Tierra Rejada Park at 8:30am. So, if you like to bike, or if you like to drink coffee, or if you just like to be around some cool people in spandex shorts, then this ride is meant for you. The sky was overcast with large tropical looking clouds. The air was cool because of the cloud cover. The rain at the end of the ride was refreshing. It was one of the best days to bike EVER! Yes, a mighty group that included Patricia, Joni, Kate, Mike and Ernesto ventured from Moorpark into the citrus groves of Moorpark/Somis. This was one of the best rides because of the chemistry of the group, the weather and the scenic beauty of the route. Come join the fun on our next Saturday ride in East Ventura County.

- Read Road Bike Path Connector -

If you haven't already noticed, the City of Thousand Oaks is trying to make cycling safer and fun. Within the last year they have installed a bike path from Olsen Road and Highway 23 down onto Read Road heading into Moorpark. The city calls this the "Read Road Bike Connector." Basically, it is a way for bikers, police, fire and emergency vehicles a shorter and quicker way to an isolated section of Thousand Oaks off Read Road. This "bike path" is also meant to divert cyclists from using the very hazardous Norwegian Grade (Moorpark Road). This bike path has been dropped down from heaven because now Moorpark and Camarillo bikers do not have to go all the way into Simi Valley, bike on Highway 23 or use Moorpark Road to venture into Thousand Oaks.
